The Journey to Excellence (Mapili GmbH Germany; and Mapili Africa Pty Ltd, South Africa)

The Journey to Excellence (J2Ex) focuses on enhancing sustainability and competitiveness by improving personal and organisational excellence. Its hands-on approach grows out of program developer Nina Mapili’s 12+ years of experience working with African entrepreneurs and managers through her association with SAFRI, the Southern Africa Initiative of German Business and with other organisations such as SADC-DFRC.

The rights to all workshops described herein belong to Germany-based Mapili GmbH. Together with South Africa-based Mapili Africa (Pty) Ltd, it has been responsible for presenting J2Ex workshops and mentoring entrepreneurs in 9 SADC countries – in conjunction with a variety of partners.

At the core of the Journey to Excellence are two intertwined programs: Preparing to Excel and Assessing Excellence. These are flanked by supporting programs designed to help businesses and organisations address the areas for improvement identified in the core programs.

Preparing to Excellence Workshops

Preparing to Excel workshops is dedicated to helping businesses, organisations, and also individuals, take the first steps on their Journey to Excellence. They help individuals and management teams develop, implement and improve their strategic framework.

Take Charge of Your Life (2-3days)

This workshop is designed for individuals who want to improve their level of excellence and take positive charge of their lives by developing their own vision, mission and values, and then formulating a plan to achieve their vision. The 2-3 day workshop is appropriate for young people, new managers, and anyone else who aspires to leading an entrepreneurial life.

Take Charge of Your Business (2.5 – 3 days)

This workshop is designed for owners and management teams from SMEs that do not yet have clearly-formulated and well-integrated vision, mission, values, goals, and strategies in place and implemented. It is also well-suited for people who are planning to start a business.

Strategic Alignment (3 days)

This workshop can be used by management teams in various ways:

  • If their business or organisation’s strategic framework is not yet very robust, they can use it to address in detail their open issues surrounding strategic alignment, and plan a way forward
  • Those who do have a robust strategic framework can use it as part of their strategic review and planning process.
  • It can be used to prepare teams for a Self-Assessment Workshop

Attendees should include an organization’s entire management team – plus other key people such as informal leaders. By the end of the workshop, teams will have refined vision, mission and value statements, closely examined goals, and begun to implement a basic approach to cascading and implementing strategy.

It is important to note that this is not a complete strategic planning workshop. Strategic planning workshops are offered separately on a single company per workshop basis.

Assessing Excellence:

The Journey to Excellence engages entrepreneurs, MDs/CEOs and their management teams in a process that initiates a robust cycle of continuous improvement – if followed over time. As with any other journey, though, travellers want to know periodically how far they have progressed. The three levels of the Assessing Excellence program provide them with the means to measure their progress – always at a level of rigour appropriate to the organisation’s level of maturity.

All assessments are done by the managers/entrepreneurs themselves, using the EFQM Excellence Model, a globally respected management tool. It enables them to very objectively and holistically assess their company’s performance excellence relative to good and best practices, determine strengths and areas for improvement, and identify key improvement opportunities. Their assessment results guide the planning and implementation of improvement activities, and initiate the first cycle of continuous improvement.

Introduction to Excellence – Level 1

This level is for those with a solid strategic framework in place, who now want to grow, improve, and introduce cycles of continuous improvement to business.

Committed to Excellence – Level 2

This level is for organizations with well- established strategic frameworks that are ready to challenge the status quo

Striving for Excellence – Level 3

This level is for well – sorted businesses and other organisations seriously aspiring to becoming world class.
